HISTORY AND GOALS

Since August 1999, Cohbern Radio has produced “SHALOM USA ~ America’s Jewish Voice”, Baltimore’s first & only Jewish talk radio program. SHALOM USA began airing on August 1, 1999 as a one hour talk show on Sunday mornings from 8am-9am, and in February 2000, expanded to its current two hour format from 8am-10am on AM1300 - WJFK. News from Israel via Arutz7-Israel National News airs as a regular segment of each week’s program.

From May 2001 through November 2001, SHALOM USA was syndicated to six other cities; 1540AM- WNWR in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; 1310AM-KMBS in Monroe, Louisiana; 1050AM-WLYC in Williamsport, Pennsylvania; 1590AM-WABV in Abbeville, South Carolina; 1550AM-KXTO in Reno, Nevada; and 1390AM-WADA in Shelby, North Carolina.

Since its inception, SHALOM USA provides quality Jewish programming on diverse topics of interest to the entire Jewish community. Topics include Israel; Jewish education; political commentary; trends in American Jewish life; Jewish communities abroad; Jewish music, books and culture; religious holidays; and current events. SHALOM USA also serves as a medium for Jewish organizations to publicize upcoming events. As of January 1, 2003, 172 episodes of SHALOM USA have been broadcast. The goal of each week’s show is to educate, enlighten and entertain the listening audience.

Guests interviewed on SHALOM USA come from a wide variety of religious affiliations and political backgrounds, which mirrors the diversity of the Jewish community. SHALOM USA hosts rabbis, educators, university professors, authors, musicians, journalists, politicians, political commentators, community activists, sociologists and historians. These guests appear live on SHALOM USA from throughout the country and from locations around the world, including Israel, England, Russia and Canada.

SHALOM USA is hosted by Jay Bernstein and produced by Larry Cohen. It airs locally on Baltimore’s Superstation, AM1300-WJFK. WJFK is an affiliate of CBS radio, and the flagship station of the Baltimore Ravens. WJFK’s transmitter reaches well beyond the Baltimore area to Annapolis, Columbia, Westminster, Eastern Shore, and the outskirts of Washington DC. SHALOM USA estimates its local audience at 15,000 to 20,000 listeners weekly.
